Palestine

Paving a path toward Peace Process from a new perspective

In Palestine, a region that has experienced repeated conflicts and confrontations, we are creating an unprecedented space for dialogues in the peace process with young leaders. Together with them, we are also continuously working on humanitarian assistance and initiatives aimed at achieving peace.

For over 70 years, the Palestinian issue has been marked by ongoing armed conflict, occupation, and struggles, significantly impacting the stability of the Middle East and the international community. Despite ongoing attempts to find a solution, the situation in Palestine became even more devastated after Hamas launched a surprise attack on Israel on October 7, 2023, followed by Israeli military operations in retaliation. By September 2024, the death toll of Palestinians in Gaza Strip had exceeded 40,000, with nearly 10,000 injured. Countless children have lost their parents, many people have been left disabled, and prolonged displacement has led to deaths from diseases and other causes. Despite multiple dialogues and negotiations for ceasefire, including the failure of the Oslo Accords, no effective or sustainable peace has been achieved, and the path to peace, security, and improved people's living conditions remains distant.

In light of this situation, while international efforts toward a ceasefire in Gaza and addressing the humanitarian crisis are crucial, there is also an urgent need for new approaches and perspectives to advance the peace process. Historically, dialogues between Israel and Palestine, as well as within Palestine, have been mainly dominated by older male political leaders, while the participation of young people, including women, who should play a key role in the future of society and peace, has been extremely rare. Moving forward, it is essential for young people, including those involved in the conflict, to actively participate in talks and take strong actions in advancing the youth-led peace processes and peacebuilding.

Drawing on our experience in conflict areas such as Somalia and Yemen, we are working to create spaces for dialogue with Palestinian young leaders, while also engaging in humanitarian assistance together with them. Through these initiatives, we aim to build a foundation for peace led by young people.

Establishing Dialogue Spaces for a New Process to Peace and Justice Involving Youth and Conflict Parties

Since October 2023, we have been engaging in dialogues and discussions with Palestinian youth, local organizations, and NGOs and we have recognized that young people among the conflict parties show greater flexibility and a willingness to participate in dialogues with new perspectives, even in the current dire circumstances. Historically and presently, both within Palestine and between Palestine and Israel, participation in negotiations and peace talks has been mainly limited to older male political leaders, leaving few opportunities for youth and women to have a voice in those processes.

Now, amid the deep frustration and anger over the many failed ceasefire agreements and peace negotiations, we believe it is crucial to create a new dialogue space led by youth. Specifically, we are organizing dialogue sessions globally with young Palestinian leaders involved in the conflict, in collaboration with experts of peace negotiation and conflict resolution. These sessions aim to deepen discussions on more meaningful agreements and their proper implementation. As a trusted Japan-based NGO, we are actively leveraging our credibility and positions/roles as mediators.

Emergency Humanitarian Assistance to Gaza

In response to the rapidly deteriorating humanitarian situation in Gaza, we are working with local NGOs and community members to protect and improve the lives of the people. For example, in the face of people’s worsening living conditions and sanitation during prolonged displacement, we are conducting cleaning and disinfection activities in shelters, setting up medical centers, distributing safe drinking water, and running awareness campaigns to prevent infectious diseases. Together with displaced people in the shelters and young people who are involved in conflict, we are advancing these efforts to restore trust among the people and enhance the resilience of people.(As of 31st October 2024, the project is being coordinated due to the deteriorating situation in Northern Gaza)
